About the role
The Staff Firmware Engineer will design, implement and own a reusable on‑device ML inference platform for resource‑constrained devices, integrating inference into Zephyr/FreeRTOS firmware, developing drivers and DMA paths, debugging hardware, training and optimizing models, and shipping features while guiding the team in AI‑native development.
About the company
Life360 is a remote‑first consumer technology company that builds family‑focused mobile apps, Tile tracking devices and Pet GPS trackers, serving about 97.8 million monthly active users in over 180 countries. The company’s mission is to keep people close to the ones they love, and it emphasizes an AI‑native, mission‑driven culture with more than 500 employees.
Requirements
- 10+ years of firmware engineering experience delivering complex consumer hardware from prototype to mass production at scale.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
- Deep expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems and strong fluency with RTOS internals (Zephyr, FreeRTOS or equivalent).
- Extensive low‑level hardware knowledge (SPI/I²C/UART, DMA, interrupts, driver development) and hands‑on debugging with scopes, logic analyzers and JTAG.
- Proven experience deploying ML models on microcontroller‑class hardware in shipping products.
- Proficiency with embedded inference frameworks such as TensorFlow Lite Micro, CMSIS‑NN, ExecuTorch or equivalents and model optimization techniques (quantization, pruning).
- Ability to develop and train models yourself, not just deploy others’ models.
- Solid understanding of sensor data and signal‑processing pipelines (e.g., IMU).
- Daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) and critical review of AI‑generated output.
- Strong written communication skills and habit of documenting decisions across firmware, hardware and data‑science teams.
- Nice to have: experience with security/compliance for connected devices (secure boot, OTA signing, FCC/CE), cellular/BLE/GPS/audio subsystems, new‑board bring‑up, schematic review, and manufacturing test/support.
