The role leads and evolves the design system foundations for ChatGPT, defining principles, patterns and standards that enable coherent, high‑quality experiences at scale, working with research, engineering, product and design teams from the San Francisco HQ.

Requirements

• Exceptional craft bar and motivation to raise the quality, clarity, and distinctiveness of design across OpenAI.
• Sophisticated design taste with ability to make judgment explicit, teachable, and actionable for others.
• Deep experience designing and evolving product or design systems at scale.
• View a design system as a living body of product judgment, not merely a collection of components.
• Exceptional command of typography, layout, spacing, responsive behavior, accessibility, and interaction design.
• Ability to move fluently between foundational systems work and concrete, high‑craft product experiences.
• Care about choosing the right default as well as designing the full range of possibilities.
• Ability to explain not only what a pattern should look like, but when and why a product team should choose it.
• Skilled at turning ambiguous or inconsistent work into a coherent, extensible system.
• Curiosity about emerging technology and how design systems can evolve alongside new product capabilities and interaction models.
• Based in San Francisco HQ with relocation assistance provided.
